Mary Nartowicz Obituary

Mary Nartowicz of Milltown passed away peacefully on February 23rd at St. Joseph’s Senior Home and  Nursing Center.  She was 90.

She was born in Astoria, New York where she grew up surrounded by a large and loving extended family.  She moved to New Jersey after marrying her husband Ed in 1951.

A love of cooking and baking was passed down from her family.  Many family, friends and neighbors received meals and baked goods from her over the years, especially when they were experiencing difficult times.  There were many lucky recipients of her delicious cookies every Christmas and Easter, a tradition she kept up until it became too difficult in her last few years.

Mary was a devoted parishioner of Our Lady Lourdes Church and could always be counted on if help was needed.  She was a long time member of the OLOL Altar Rosary Society, a willing and ready volunteer for any event or project.  She also spent countless hours as a member of the Our Lady of Lourdes School PTA when her daughters attended, as well as several years after.  For many years and until recently, she worked diligently for the Holy Cross Family Ministries on the “Rosaries around the World” Campaign. She received the distinguished recognition from St. Peter’s Hospital for over 30 years of volunteer service, working primarily in the admitting department but also visiting anyone she knew that were patients during her shifts.

Her “guilty pleasures” included many nights of Bingo with her friends, and her trips to Atlantic City, initially with friends and later with her daughters, where she could be found playing the penny slot machines.  But her greatest joy was her grandchildren, who she cherished.  She was grateful that she was able to share in many important milestones in their lives. But mostly, she will be remembered for her silly and often sarcastic sense of humor (which she kept even in her final days), and for the love and care she gave to her family and friends.

Mary is predeceased by her parents Gus and Ante, her sister Margaret and her brother Dominic.

She is survived and will be missed by her husband of 69 years, Edmund, her daughters Mary Lynn and Laura and her grandchildren Gabrielle and Alexander.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Mary’s name to St. Joseph’s Senior Home and Nursing Center, 3 St. Joseph’s Terrace, Woodbridge, NJ  07095, or online at www.stjosephseniorhome.org

We would like to extend our grateful and heartfelt thanks to the amazing staff at St. Joseph’s, whose loving care and compassion will never be forgotten.

Due to COVID-19, services will be private with a celebration of life to take place at a later date.
