John "Johnny" J. Michels, Jr.

John J. Michels, Jr. of South River, NJ (formerly of Milltown) passed away on January 8, 2023 at St. Peters Medical Center.  He was 78 years old.  Born and raised in Newark, NJ, John was a resident of Milltown for over 35 years.  He honorably served his country as a member of the US Air Force in the 1960’s. John loved to work on cars, go to concerts and movies, and appreciated art.  He got a lot of pleasure out of cooking, especially his own recipes like his famous hot dog soup and delicious pumpkin pie. John was an animal lover and comic book collector.  He was known for his intelligence and quick wit and always told the best “dad jokes”.  John’s best trait was his kindness; he would take in and help anyone in need and had a genuine smile that could light up a room.

Predeceased by his parents John J. Michels, Sr. and Helen Michels and brother Neil Michels; John is survived by his beloved daughters and sons-in-law Denise and Michael Donohue and Lauren and Jim Perez, son John Michels III, and daughters and sons-in-law Sarah and Jason Hersey and Alexandra and Paulo Marcelino; grandchildren George, Mikey, Anthony, Tatum, Melody, Mia, JJ, and Dominic; sister Susan Hart and her husband Walter and daughter Lisa; and sister-in-law Claire Michels and her children Melissa and Matt.

Friends and family will be received Wednesday 4-8pm at the Bronson and Guthlein Funeral Home of Milltown.  Final disposition will be private.
